Michael Lau Brings Flower Characters to Carhartt WIP in Hong Kong Exhibition

HONG KONG—Michael Lau, the artist credited with pioneering the designer toy movement, returns to the city’s street culture scene with “Flowers, Flowers Everywhere!,” a solo exhibition running Aug. 13-23, 2026, at the Carhartt WIP flagship store in Causeway Bay.

The show presents Lau’s signature fusion of botanical imagery, character design, fashion, and pop culture in a setting that blurs the line between art exhibition and streetwear project. Presented in partnership with Carhartt WIP, the 11-day event includes paintings, sculptures, and a Hong Kong-exclusive capsule collection.

The Artist Behind the Garden

Lau first gained international recognition in the late 1990s with his Gardener figure series, a collection of stylized characters inspired by himself, friends, and street culture. That series became a landmark in designer toy history and established Lau as a defining figure of the movement.

His work has since expanded across sculpture, painting, illustration, fashion, graphics, and collaborations with major global brands. Lau has never drawn a firm boundary between fine art, commercial design, and popular culture, treating all these domains as material for the same creative playground.

Pandemic Inspiration

The flower series emerged during the COVID-19 pandemic, when Lau spent more time at home and grew increasingly interested in the plants surrounding him. At a time of restriction and uncertainty, the blooms offered color and optimism.

What began as a source of visual comfort evolved into something more layered. Lau’s flowers feature oversized eyes and expressive personalities, transforming botanical subjects into characters with emotions and relationships. One flower may appear curious, another romantic, another uncertain or playful.

The works function simultaneously as colorful images, emotional portraits, and cultural references. The garden becomes a metaphor for human experience, populated not by anonymous plants but by characters seeking connection.

A Natural Partnership

The decision to host the exhibition at a Carhartt WIP store rather than a conventional gallery reflects Lau’s longstanding position at the intersection of art and street culture. Carhartt WIP operates in workwear, skateboarding, streetwear, and youth culture—all areas that have long overlapped with Lau’s creative universe.

The partnership also extends into fashion with a Hong Kong-exclusive capsule collection, continuing Lau’s history of blurring distinctions between artwork, toy, fashion item, and collectible.

What Visitors Will See

The exhibition is compact; visitors should budget 30 to 60 minutes to experience the works. Key elements to examine:

  • Facial expressions and eyes, where each flower’s personality emerges
  • Cultural references drawn from fashion, toys, sports, advertising, music, and street culture
  • Connections to earlier work, including Lau’s “In the Garden” series and “The Flowery Surprise,” a triptych that reimagined da Vinci’s “The Last Supper” with floral figures

Broader Significance

The exhibition represents another chapter in a story that began with Gardener more than 20 years ago. Where the original series created a fictional universe of street-fashion-inspired human figures, the flower paintings replace human characters with blooms while maintaining the same world-building impulse.

Lau’s work helped demonstrate that collectible figures could occupy a space between art, design, and popular culture—an idea that has since become central to contemporary creative culture. The flowers extend that philosophy in a new form.

“For anyone interested in contemporary Hong Kong art, designer toys, street culture or fashion, this is a chance to see one of the city’s most influential creative figures working with a visual language that has evolved over more than two decades,” the exhibition description notes.

“Flowers, Flowers Everywhere!” runs through Aug. 23 at 13 Pak Sha Road in Causeway Bay. Because of its short duration and limited-edition character, visitors interested in the capsule collection are advised to arrive early.
