But a new variety from Dutch breeder Living Creations has upended that convention, producing the first true groundcover hydrangea that spreads horizontally like a living carpet.
Called Groundbreaker®, the plant debuted at Europe’s Plantarium trade show and later at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show, generating intense interest among horticulturists and home gardeners alike. The compact shrub tops out at 12 to 16 inches tall but spreads 24 to 32 inches wide, forming dense mounds that knit together into continuous swaths of color.
A Serendipitous Discovery
Every great plant innovation has an origin story, and Groundbreaker’s is rooted in happenstance. Living Creations, a sixth-generation nursery in Boskoop—a Dutch town so densely packed with breeders it is often called the Silicon Valley of horticulture—was working on an unrelated breeding project when a grower touring the test fields stopped at a peculiar low-growing seedling.
Nurseryman Alex Schoemaker and breeder Leo Slingerland had not set out to create a groundcover hydrangea. But the odd, sprawling plant sparked immediate curiosity, leading to years of careful development to turn the chance seedling into a stable, reliable garden variety. The result is the world’s first true groundcover hydrangea, built on the tough, sun-loving Hydrangea paniculata lineage known for its hardiness and low-maintenance reputation.
Built for Performance
Unlike traditional hydrangeas that push upward and outward, Groundbreaker does the opposite. Its low, wide habit makes it ideal for solving practical garden problems: covering bare slopes, edging pathways, or filling awkward gaps between pavers.
The flowers themselves are the main attraction. Conical blooms open in creamy white and gradually shift through blush and rose to deeper wine shades as the season progresses. A single plant carries multiple color phases over one growing season. Each bloom lasts up to 100 days—unusually long for a shrub—providing color from midsummer through autumn without deadheading or replanting.
Effortless Care for All Skill Levels
As a panicle hydrangea, Groundbreaker inherits a reputation for resilience. The plant requires no staking, tolerates straightforward pruning, and survives temperatures down to minus-22 degrees Fahrenheit (USDA zones 5 through 8) without winter protection.
It performs best in sunny to partly shaded spots with well-drained, fertile soil. Regular watering and an early spring feeding yield a fuller flush of blooms. That combination of toughness and low maintenance has made the variety popular with landscapers and home gardeners alike—behaving more like a dependable groundcover perennial than a fussy shrub.
Democratizing Hydrangeas
Perhaps the most significant aspect of Groundbreaker’s debut is how it expands access to hydrangeas for gardeners with limited space. Its compact size suits containers, window boxes, and balcony planters just as well as border plantings or large-scale landscape coverage.

Groundbreaker launched in the United Kingdom and United States through select specialty retailers after its European debut. Demand has been brisk enough that early batches sold out quickly. Three varieties are now available—Blush, Ruby, and Greeny—some on preorder for autumn shipping.
